ComboIntracel (fractional RF microneedling) in Thessaloniki
Intracel is radiofrequency microneedling (RF microneedling): insulated microneedles deliver the energy directly into the dermis, where collagen is made, without burning the surface. It is our most powerful treatment for acne scars, enlarged pores, oiliness and mild laxity, with numbing cream and 3–5 days of redness, under the supervision of the plastic surgeon.
At a glance
- Session length
- about 45–60 minutes, including the numbing cream
- Sessions
- usually 3
- Interval
- every 1–2 months
- What it feels like
- tolerable with strong numbing cream; a feeling of heat and pricking
- Downtime
- 3–5 days of redness and mild swelling
- When results show
- gradual, from the 1st–2nd month; peak 3–6 months after the last session
- How long it lasts
- lasting improvement in scars and pores; tightening holds 1–2 years
- Performed by
- Doctor (Dr Papaioannou) or under his supervision
What is it and how does it work?
Intracel combines two stimuli: microneedles, like Dermapen, and radiofrequency, like Volnewmer, but emitted from the tip of each needle, inside the skin. The needles are insulated along their length except for the tip, so the heat is released at a controlled depth (0.5–3.5 mm) and the epidermis is not burned [1]. At that depth the thermal injury contracts and remodels collagen, which is why Intracel improves scars that do not respond to other methods, closes pores and reduces oiliness by lowering the activity of the sebaceous glands [1] [2]. In studies, RF microneedling gives an improvement in atrophic acne scars comparable to fractional laser, with less downtime and a lower risk of pigment changes on darker skin [2] [3]. Because the treatment needs strong topical anaesthesia and medical oversight, at Essentia it is done under the supervision of Dr Papaioannou, who can combine it with subcision for the deepest scars at his practice.
Treatment areas
- Acne scars: the most stubborn, deep scars on cheeks and temples
- Enlarged pores and oiliness, including mild active acne
- Mild laxity: jawline, cheeks and neck
- Fine wrinkles and texture
- Stretch marks on the body: as a stronger option than Dermapen 4
Is it right for me?
Intracel suits anyone with acne scars that did not improve enough with microneedling, markedly enlarged pores or oiliness, or a combination of scars and mild laxity. It is suitable for all skin tones. You need to allow for 3–5 days of redness after each session. For simple dullness or fine lines we prefer Dermapen 4; for pure laxity without scars, Volnewmer.
How does a session go?
- Assessment by Dr Papaioannou: scar type, depth and number of sessions
- Cleansing and strong numbing cream for 30–45 minutes; in selected cases local anaesthetic
- Treatment with the Intracel handpiece: the microneedles enter to the set depth and emit radiofrequency for fractions of a second
- Soothing mask and, optionally, LED light therapy
- Care instructions and sunscreen; the redness settles in 3–5 days
When we postpone
- Active inflammatory acne in a flare, or infection in the area
- Pacemaker or another implanted electronic device
- Metal implants in the area
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding
- Oral acne medication in the last months
- Tendency to keloid scars
- Clotting disorders or blood thinners: check with your doctor first
After the treatment
Redness and mild swelling for 3–5 days, like a strong sunburn; tiny crusts at the needle points that fall off on their own. No make-up for 24–48 hours, gentle cleansing and moisturiser, high-factor sunscreen for a month and no sun, sauna or intense exercise for a week. With active acne a mild folliculitis may appear for 2–3 days.
What to expect: before and after
Before and after: for the first 3–5 days redness and tiny crusts, then the skin is smoother and the pores tighter. Scars improve gradually from the 1st–2nd month after each session, and the full result of the 3 sessions shows 3–6 months after the last one, as the collagen matures. The improvement in scars and pores is lasting; the tightening holds 1–2 years. Before-and-after photos are shown at the assessment, with the consent of the people who shared them.
Are there side effects?
The expected reactions are redness, swelling and tiny crusts for a few days. Less often: passing hyperpigmentation (mainly with sun exposure), small bruises, an acne or cold-sore flare. Burns or scarring are rare when depth and indications are respected, which is why the treatment is done under medical supervision [1] [3]. If you see pus, marked pain or blisters, call us the same day.
What does the cost depend on?
The cost depends on the area, the depth and the number of sessions, and on whether it is combined with subcision or LED. Add Intracel to your plan and the personalised proposal, with prices, comes to you on WhatsApp.

Frequently asked questions
Does it hurt?
With strong numbing cream it is tolerable: you feel heat and pricking. In selected cases the doctor adds local anaesthetic.
How is it different from Dermapen 4?
Dermapen 4 works with the microneedles alone and has almost no downtime. Intracel adds radiofrequency inside the skin, so it is stronger for deep scars, pores and laxity, with 3–5 days of redness.
How many sessions are needed?
Usually 3, every 1–2 months. The 'shots' of each tip are shared across the sessions, so the whole area is covered.
When does the result show?
Gradually, from the first or second month, as the collagen remodels; the full result 3–6 months after the last session.
Does it work on active acne?
On mild acne yes: it reduces oiliness and pores, and so the intensity of the acne. In an inflamed flare we wait for it to settle first.
Is it suitable for dark skin?
Yes. Because the heat is released inside the skin and not at the surface, the risk of pigment changes is lower than with lasers.
How much does it cost?
It depends on the area and sessions. Add Intracel to your plan and the proposal with prices comes to you on WhatsApp, with no obligation.
